A Valhalla taxi placed on a named street rather than a park pin, so the car is where you are standing when you walk out.
A hamlet, not a town

Valhalla Cab — Three Thousand Residents, One Dam and a Ring of Parkway Ramps

Valhalla is a hamlet. Not a village, not a town of its own, with no separate town hall to ring — it sits inside the Town of Mount Pleasant, answers to the 10595 ZIP, and counted a little over three thousand residents at the last census. The lived-in part is genuinely small: Columbus Avenue down the middle, Broadway running alongside, the school, the firehouse, a handful of storefronts. Then the ground lifts and the hamlet stops.

What lifts is the Kensico Dam, with the reservoir that supplies the city standing behind it. The masonry wall and the lawns at its foot are Kensico Dam Plaza, a Westchester County park, and on a summer weekend it holds more people than live in the hamlet. West and above sits the other Valhalla: Westchester Medical Center and the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, New York Medical College and Westchester Community College along Grasslands Road, with the county jail beyond. Two very large cemeteries, Kensico and Gate of Heaven, take much of the rest of the map.

For anyone driving, this is parkway country before it is anything else. The Taconic State Parkway finishes its southern run here, the Bronx River Parkway climbs up from White Plains beside the water, the Sprain Brook is a short hop west and Route 100 threads between them. Nothing in the hamlet is far from a ramp, which is why a Valhalla cab reaches the front of the medical centre or the foot of the platform stairs quickly — and why a stranger who commits to the wrong ramp loses ten minutes with no civilised way to turn round.

The same board covers Hawthorne taxi over the ridge, Mount Pleasant taxi for the town Valhalla belongs to, White Plains taxi to the south, Elmsford taxi at the crossroads and Hartsdale taxi below the parkway. Everything county-wide sits on the Westchester taxi board, and a ride arranged days ahead runs as Valhalla car service at the identical figure.

The problem

There is an event on at Kensico Dam Plaza, you drop a pin on the park, and the car you ordered cannot physically get to that pin.

What it costs you

The plaza’s own address is 1 Bronx River Parkway — a parkway, not a kerb. The pin settles on lawn inside a county park, while the lots that serve it sit off North Broadway. On the big days the approach shuts: for the July fireworks the county closes the Bronx River Parkway north of Virginia Road and the southern end of the Taconic, and from four until eleven at night North Broadway, Route 22, Hillandale Avenue and Clove Road go with them. Summer Sunday festivals fill the same lawns. A driver working off a map meets a barrier and gives the job back.

What we do instead

We ask which gate you are standing at and which side of the closure you are on, then send the car to a street the police have actually left open — the Broadway end, the station, or the Virginia Road side. The figure is agreed before anyone pulls away, and a closed parkway does not move it.

The Harlem Line

Valhalla Taxi to the Harlem Line — One Island Platform, Both Directions

A station has stood here since 1890, built when the reservoir works pushed the railroad and the old Kensico settlement out of the valley and the replacement took the name Valhalla. What stands there now is a single high-level island platform, six cars long, with northbound and southbound trains drawing up on either side of the same slab. At midnight that is a kindness: there is no wrong side to be left on and no underpass to find in the dark. It also means one set of steps for everybody, so a Valhalla taxi that stops at the foot of them removes the only walk that matters.

Late arrivals are steady work here. Give us the train number and the Valhalla taxi is at the stairs before the doors open.

Commerce Street, the Gates and the Small Lots

Commerce Street crosses the rails at grade, gates and lights and all, a short distance from the Taconic ramps. When the arms come down the queue builds fast, and a car approaching from the far side of the tracks sits watching the very train it was sent to meet. A Valhalla taxi routes round that crossing rather than into it, and we would sooner have the train number than an estimated arrival.

Parking is the other half of it. The commuter spaces here are few, they are gone by the middle of a weekday morning like every lot on this line, and the spill lands on residential streets that were never laid out to absorb it. A standing weekday Valhalla taxi booking is one agreed figure and leaves the second car on the drive where it is useful.

Valhalla Taxi Service — 24 Hours, Every Day on the Calendar

Valhalla taxi service keeps one phone answered every hour, and in a hamlet wrapped around a hospital campus and a college that is a description of the work rather than a slogan. Shift changes at the medical centre fall in the small hours. People come and go from the Grasslands Road buildings at times no published timetable covers. Visitors leave late because visiting finished late, and the cemeteries bring families in from out of state who have no car with them at all.

The clock is not part of the arithmetic. Three in the morning on Thanksgiving is quoted at the figure a Tuesday afternoon is quoted at, because there is no surcharge sitting inside the price waiting to be lifted back off. Booking a Valhalla taxi ahead secures the vehicle, and the vehicle is the scarce item — early departures to the county field and the school-run window are when the fleet is stretched thinnest.

Picking the Right Car — Bags, Seats and Steps

Tell the dispatcher the headcount and the luggage while the call is still live. A vehicle swapped later comes from wherever its last job ended, and at shift change on Grasslands Road that is a long way round. Naming a Valhalla taxi with the right boot space at the start costs nothing and saves the wait.

Airport Flat Rates — Valhalla Taxi to HPN, LGA, JFK, EWR and Teterboro

Mid-county and hard against the parkways, the hamlet prices as a short hop to the county field and a plain run down to the Queens terminals. None of the Valhalla taxi figures below move for direction, for the clock or for the weather, and there is no toll waiting at the far end.

Cars out nowHPN — Westchester County · $70

The short one — the only Valhalla taxi journey on this list that never leaves Westchester. East past the reservoir and you are at the terminal kerb in about a quarter of an hour.

HPN car service →

LGA — LaGuardia · $150

Down the Sprain or the Bronx River and over the Whitestone. A good share of the pre-dawn Valhalla taxi work out of the hamlet finishes at this terminal.

LGA car service →

JFK — Kennedy · $160

Ten dollars under Newark, and seldom much slower on the road than the LaGuardia run. The inbound flight is watched from this end, so a late landing shifts the pickup time and leaves the rest of the booking untouched.

JFK car service →

EWR — Newark Liberty · $170

Over the Hudson or down through the Bronx, whichever the hour favours. Every bridge and turnpike charge on the chosen route is already inside the number.

Teterboro is $150 from Valhalla, matching the LaGuardia figure exactly. Every other town in the county, and every field, is listed on the airport taxi rates page.

Quick answers

Valhalla Taxi — Quick Answers

What is the number for a Valhalla taxi?

914-564-7013. A dispatcher picks up whatever the hour reads. The same line handles the hamlet streets, the station, the campus above it, the five airports and monthly accounts.

Can you collect from the Westchester Medical Center campus?

Yes, and it is worth naming the building on the call. The campus runs to several separate entrances on internal roads — the main hospital, the children’s hospital, the college blocks — and minutes separate one from another. Tell us the building and the door and the Valhalla taxi comes to that door.

Do you pick up at the train station?

Around the clock. One island platform means nobody is set down on the wrong side, and the car sits at the foot of the stairs. Quote the train rather than the clock and the Commerce Street gates stop being your problem.

What do the airport runs cost from Valhalla?

Flat both ways, tolls in: Westchester County $70, LaGuardia $150, Kennedy $160, Newark $170, Teterboro $150. Local Valhalla taxi trips inside the hamlet are quoted on the call.

There is an event at Kensico Dam Plaza. Can you still reach me?

Yes, but tell us which gate you are at. Event days close roads around the park, sometimes including the Bronx River Parkway and North Broadway, so we set the pickup on an open street nearby instead of inside the park itself.

Do you provide car seats?

Included at no cost, and fitted before the vehicle leaves us. Give ages and numbers at the booking stage so the correct seat travels in the correct car instead of being chased down later.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track the inbound and move the pickup to match. The fare you were quoted stands, whether you land twenty minutes early or three hours late.

Which ways can I pay?

Cash, a cheque, Zelle, Venmo and Cash App all settle at exactly the figure quoted. Paying by card puts a flat $10 service charge on the transaction — $10 on the $70 county run and $10 on the $170 Newark run, because it charges the payment method, not the fare. Weekly riders can run an account and settle at month’s end.

Every Valhalla taxi fare on this page is flat, quoted before the car moves, identical in both directions and inclusive of tolls. HPN is Westchester County. LGA is LaGuardia. JFK is Kennedy. EWR is Newark Liberty. TEB is Teterboro.
